Claremore Public Schools Westside Elementary Extension is a 1,600 square foot STEMÂ classroom addition. The design includes a library reading nook, STEM classroom stations, cast-in-place concrete teaching wall, and an expansive glass wall that connects inside and outside.
The client passed a bond package that included additions and renovations for each school in the district. These projects all had unique challenges, but particularly with the Westside Extension, time, budget, and building placement were critical. We had a short, 14-week timeline to move from initial concepts to being out to bid as well as a budget of $750,000. The building placement on the site was determined by equal classroom accessibility as well as adjacency to the library. However, the only land available for placement would remove daylight access to the existing library. To remedy this, the design had to let in as much light as possible from the STEM classroom, filtering in through the added reading nook as well as replacing solid wood entry doors with a transparent storefront system.
